Over the many years of being a professional photographer, I have became well aware of the importance of conveying interesting facial expressions while being photographed. During this time I have been honing this craft of coaching my subjects to produce both realistic and flattering facial expressions and images.

My head shot work has been published both nationally and internationally. Some clients I have worked with include; Syracuse University Basketball Coach Jim Boeheim, MacKenzie-Childs, Burger King, Carrols Restaurant Group CEO, Ed Pagano (Chief of Staff for Senator Patrick Leahy), Auston Mathews for Bauer Hockey, ProLiteracy, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Lambda Legal Defense, Aspen Dental, Freed Maxick, Miss New York and Miss New York State Queen Shelbie Handville – among many others.

During our session, I will teach you to bring out the subtleties of the human face that attract us to certain people and images. It is my goal to bring out the best in my clients and the most beautiful, creative and powerful photographs of themselves that they have ever experienced.

This is an actual example of a “Before and After” from a REAL head shot photography session

My goal is to take a photograph that makes you look your best.   I focus on using your own natural expressions and creativity throughout the entire process.  I will help guide you towards what will become a captivating head shot and portrait that is tailored specifically for you.

Here are some tips that I recommend if booking a portrait session. Keep in mind that these are just tips.  If we are getting together for more casual purposes such as family or portrait for personal / social websites, then by all means feel free to express yourself with all the patterns and jewelry you wish!  These tips are intended more for people who are interested in professional head shots and/or portraiture for marketing purposes.

Share your intentions for the session. Let me know what kind of look you want and where the photo will be seen.

Drink lots of water and be well rested (so your eyes will not have dark circles).

Do not drink alcohol or take any drugs directly before or the night before your shoot (so you are not dehydrated).

Arrive on time.

What to wear – Anyone:

  • Wear clothes that are comfortable and that make you look great. Bring at least a few options for us to consider.
  • Make sure your jacket and/or shirt fit you well. A poor fitting jacket or shirt will be obvious in the photos
  • Dress appropriately… business attire.. you may want to dress up a little bit more than usual.  Bring a couple outfits or jackets if possible. Don’t worry about pants or shoes if we will only be photographing headshots unless it helps you feel the part.
  • Clothes should be neatly ironed
  • Avoid busy patterns and large lines/stripes unless they will be covered with a solid or subtle patterned jacket.  However, as you can see in the above picture, wearing patterns isn’t an absolute “no, no”. Here, you can see how beautiful and captivating the subject can still be. These are just general suggestions

What to wear – Men:

  • The standard business look is a suit jacket, dress shirt and tie. If time allows, bring a couple combinations.
  • A casual business look is often a jacket and open dress shirt, shirt and tie (no jacket), or dress shirt on it’s own
  • Polo shirts are a good look for some businesses. Be sure the shirt is in good condition and fit well
  • For a no-jacket casual look, bring colored, black and or neutral colored shirts.
  • A white dress shirt by itself is a bad idea – unless you plan to wear it underneath something (jacket or sweater).
  • Bring a few different jackets, shirt colors and ties so we have choices for the photo

What to wear – Women:

  • Avoid big prints and busy patterns unless it will be covered with a more solid or subtle patterned jacket.
  • Different necklines will change the apparent shape of your face. Bring a variety different shirts/blouses to see what works best
  • For a no-jacket casual look, bring various colored blouses and jackets, scarves, etc…

REMEMBER: Select and wear clothes that make you feel comfortable. Select something that makes you feel good.

Jewelry:

  • Keep jewelry extremely simple – smaller is generally better, particularly earings
  • Avoid jewelry that would distract from your face
  • The picture is about your face not your jewelry

RETOUCHING

Consider having at least one or two of your images from our photography session retouched.  The camera and lenses I use will bring out ALL the very minute details of your face. Details that most people would never see if they were standing directly in front of you.  Having professional retouching should enhance your look, NOT CHANGE your look. So while I am able to shed 150 lbs from you if you desire, I don’t usually recommend it!  Retouching can be as little as $5 up to $40 depending on what you would like done.
