About John Carnessali – Syracuse Photographer
I’m John Carnessali, an award-winning Syracuse photographer with over 20 years of experience capturing weddings, families, newborns, high school seniors, and professional headshots across Central New York. I’ve had the privilege of photographing an incredible range of people over the years—from the homeless to the President of the United States, from homemakers to diplomats, and nearly everyone in between. My goal has always been to create photography that feels authentic and timeless —images that tell your story in a natural and emotional way.
Creative Roots and Photography Philosophy
I’ve always been creative—from drawing and painting as a child to eventually becoming a sculptor while living in Arizona and California, where I displayed my bronze sculptures in galleries. During that time, I supported myself through massage therapy, which, in many ways, was one of the most peaceful, beautiful, and life-changing chapters of my life.My spiritual pursuits led me to study many different disciplines which eventually led me to University of Santa Monica. It would be there that I would learn how to overcome my shyness and see each of us an extension of the other. The most profound ideas are the simplest to understand. For years, I sculpted, practiced massage therapy, and took photographs simply because I loved it. Photography had always been there in the background, but as digital cameras evolved, so did the ability to create and edit images on a computer rather than in a darkroom. At first, I resisted digital photography for a long time because I felt it took some of the soul out of the picture. Eventually, I gave in. What I discovered was that photography offered the perfect expression of both creativity and craft. It was fast, emotional, artistic—and, unlike some of my other creative passions, it actually paid me. Looking back now, I can clearly see that all of those experiences—art, sculpture, massage, and my spiritual pursuits - all influence the photographer I am today.
