How to get the most out of your Business, Corporate and Executive Head Shots and Portrait Photography Session
Business Headshot Tips – Syracuse Corporate & Professional Headshots
For more than two decades, I’ve photographed business and corporate headshots throughout Syracuse and Central New York. Over that time, I’ve learned how essential it is to capture natural, authentic expressions that communicate confidence, approachability, and professionalism.
My goal is simple: to create a headshot that helps you stand out — whether it’s for LinkedIn, your company website, professional branding, or speaking engagements. I guide every client through subtle posing, expression coaching, and lighting techniques that produce images that feel real, relaxed, and impactful.
Before your session, it helps to share your goals, how the images will be used, and the style you want to convey. This allows me to tailor your headshot to your profession, personality, and brand.
What to Wear for Business Headshots
Choose Solid, Simple Colors
Choosing the right clothing makes a big difference in how polished your final headshot looks. Solid, simple colors photograph best because they keep attention on your expression rather than your clothing. Navy, charcoal, black, beige, and modern earth tones are always safe choices.
Think about your industry when selecting outfits. Formal jackets or blazers tend to work best for corporate or finance roles, while clean, relaxed pieces work well for creatives and entrepreneurs. If you’re unsure, bring a few different outfits — we can review them together and pick what photographs best.
Dress for Your Industry and Brand
Think about the clients or employers you want to attract:
- Corporate / finance: more formal jackets, dress shirts, blazers.
- Creative / entrepreneurial: clean but relaxed, with a bit of personality.
- Medical / academic: professional and approachable.
If you’re unsure, bring two or three outfit options, and we can decide together.
Grooming & Styling Tips
Hair
- Schedule a trim a few days before your session—avoid drastic changes last minute.
- Bring a comb or brush for quick touch-ups during the shoot.
Makeup
- Keep makeup natural and polished. You should still look like “you.”
- Avoid heavy shimmer or glitter; matte products photograph best.
- A little translucent powder can help reduce shine under studio lights.
Men’s Grooming
- Shave or trim facial hair the morning of your session for a clean look.
- Bring a lint roller and lip balm.
- Avoid wearing sunglasses right before the session to prevent marks on your nose.
Posing & Expression Tips
Most people feel a little awkward in front of the camera, which is completely normal. My job is to guide you into natural, flattering positions and expressions. A slight forward motion of the chin helps define the jawline, relaxed shoulders improve posture, and a soft “smile with the eyes” keeps your expression authentic rather than forced.
Good posture communicates confidence, and small adjustments can make a big difference in the final images. I coach you through every step so you never feel unsure about what to do.
Choosing the Right Background
Studio Backgrounds
Clean studio backgrounds (white, grey, black, or textured tones) are timeless
and ideal for corporate websites, LinkedIn, and business profiles.
Environmental / On-Location Headshots
Photographing in your office or workspace can add context and personality
to your images, especially for teams and company branding.
Outdoor Business Portraits
Outdoor backgrounds create a modern, approachable feel—great for entrepreneurs,
creatives, and personal brands.
How to Prepare Before Your Session
The Week Before
- Select your outfits and try them on—take a few quick phone photos.
- Stay hydrated and get consistent sleep.
- Avoid major skincare treatments that could cause redness or peeling.
The Day Of
- Eat a light meal so you feel comfortable and relaxed.
- Drink water, but not so much that you feel bloated or rushed.
- Plan to arrive a bit early to settle in and get comfortable.

Business Headshot FAQ
How long does a business headshot session take?
Most individual sessions take between 20–45 minutes, depending on outfit changes
and whether we are photographing in the studio, on location, or both.
Do you retouch business headshots?
Yes. I professionally retouch each final image to keep you looking like yourself,
just rested and polished—removing temporary blemishes, reducing shine, and
gently softening lines where appropriate.
Can I bring multiple outfits?
Absolutely. I recommend bringing at least two or three options so we can choose
the best look for your profession and goals.
What if I feel awkward in front of the camera?
That’s completely normal. My job is to guide you through posing and expressions,
so you never have to figure it out on your own. I’ll direct you the entire time.

What to wear – Men
Wear clothes that are comfortable and that make you feel good. I suggest you bring a few options. By new clothes specifically for the shoot. New clothes always make us feel better!
For business attire you may want to bring a couple outfits or jackets. Don’t worry about pants or shoes if we will only be photographing from the chest up.
Avoid busy patterns and large lines/stripes unless they will be covered with a solid or subtle patterned jacket. Lines and patterns distract from the face. We want your face to be the center of attention.. not the necklace or awesome shirt. Simple is better.
A casual business look is often a jacket and open dress shirt, shirt and tie (no jacket), or dress shirt on it’s own
Polo shirts may be appropriate for some businesses.
I personally do not suggest white dress shirt by itself- unless you plan to wear it underneath a jacket.
Don’t wear overly styled shirts with lots of details, lines or patterns. They distract from the face.

What to wear – Women
Wear clothes that are comfortable and that make you feel good. I suggest you bring a few options. By new clothes specifically for the shoot. New clothes always make us feel better!

Necklines can change the shape of a face that is one reason I suggest bringing a variety different shirts/blouses as options for the photo session.
Jewelry
Keep jewelry extremely simple – smaller is generally better
Avoid jewelry that would distract from your face or cause too much sparkle
