Sometimes people wonder what the difference is between a head shot session done outdoors vs. in the studio head shot. Both convey professionalism but there are some differences even though for the untrained eye it will be very hard to discern.
The biggest difference as I see it is that head shots done outdoors tend to give the client more variety in regards to lighting and background. We can simply move to a different spot to get a different background or change the lighting as it falls on the face. I also included an on location (in the office) head shot.
Outdoor head shot sessions also seem to be a bit less intimidating to the client if they are nervous. Outdoor head shots are better if you are also looking for half and full body photographs.

Head shots done in the studio tend to be a slight bit more formal looking which may be desired depending on the clients’ needs. Backgrounds are more simple and “clean” which can make the subject “pop” a bit more.
Typical background colors tend to be shades of gray, black, blue or white. One of the greatest advantages to studio head shots is that we do not have to worry about or be subject to the elements, such as wind, rain and light.
